Tanzong spent his youth observing his parents and observing their entrepreneurial spirit. Her parents owned and operated a laundromat, her father moved house, and her mother ran a small cosmetology studio while working as a nurse.

“I really hated it back then,” Tanzong told the outlet. “But it’s clear where [my] inspiration comes from.”

However, things weren’t always rosy for Tanzong, who saw her mother diagnosed with breast cancer when she was eight and her parents divorced when she was 14. Tanzong eventually got a free ride to Stanford University, where she graduated, dealing with her mother. Died in his last year.

“[Anima Iris] is a therapeutic project that makes me happy,” Tanzong told CNBC’s Make It. “I’ve always been a very fashionable person. People always ask me, ‘Where did you get that? Where did you find that?”

Tanjong plans to complete her MBA this spring and use it to continue building her handbag business and brand to generate more than $5 million next year. “I realized there was a big gap in the market,” Tanzong said. “Women of color and specifically black women have always been excluded from the luxury narrative. Building a brand that centers these women while pushing African culture into the global landscape has been like a bingo moment for me.

Tanzong graduated from Princeton University, where she received a scholarship. Her mother died in her senior year, however, the young entrepreneur was able to graduate in 2018.

After moving to Atlanta, she started working for a manufacturing and supply company, earning $86,000 a year. She had already saved money through internships and on-campus jobs. Tanzong inherited $50,000 from her mother, and realizing she couldn’t be bothered, she took a vacation and went to Africa.

Tanzong found a local craftsman who could create his designs and started a small business. She was quickly featured in Vogue and shared on Twitter with the caption, “If you want a black-owned luxury bag, Amina Iris is a personal favourite.”

A designer was able to use her growing personality on social media to launch a new collection of luxury handbags.

Willglory Tanzong is the founder of Anima Iris, a luxury handbag brand named after her childhood best friend “Anima” and her mother “Iris”, made in Dakar, Senegal. Launched earlier this year, her quality handcrafted designs have captured the attention of thousands of consumers on social media and in the fashion community.

The Princeton graduate and now Wharton business student says her love for fashion began at a very young age. “As a kid, I always remember being really fashionable,” Tanzong said in an interview with Black Enterprise. “I’ve always liked to dress up [and] look really pretty. I think it’s part of my culture. We always have to look pretty.”

While at Princeton, she became heavily involved in the black community on campus while studying African development. After graduating, she felt uncomfortable in her comfortable job and wanted to try her luck by taking a six-month vacation to explore the African continent, including Kenya and Senegal. There, she launched the African Hustle series to spotlight young African entrepreneurs in various industries.

Tanzong ended up in Senegal because she didn’t need a visa to stay there and stayed in Dakar, where she bonded with various artists who inspired her to make handbags. “That’s when I wanted to do something,” she explained. “I wanted to do something for myself [first].”

After experimenting with her craft and thinking of ways to recover her savings through travel. She decided to quit her full-time job after having the opportunity to build the brand after receiving positive feedback even in the midst of the pandemic.

“I don’t feel like I went to Senegal and it all happened for no reason, I felt like there was more,” Tanzong said. “I understand that I have a purpose in life and if I follow the path God has laid out for me, I cannot fail.”

Since then, the Amina Iris has become a trending handbag from various fashion influencers. Since going viral on Twitter, she has expanded her team and operations, returning to Senegal to ensure high quality designs and build a team on the ground. For 2021, Tanjong has big visions for his brand.

“I realized that this company had to get this big,” she said. “Seeing how women, especially black women, react to a luxury handbag…and it creates something special that’s made for them. It’s kind of an emotional reaction for me [and] something that I think our world really needs. [It’s] something missing in this luxury landscape and the next big thing.
