Pranaiya Magoffin How Did She Kill Her Son

Pranaiya Magoffin How Did She Kill Her Son – “She laid down and got ready for bed and wanted to sleep in a minute,” said her husband, Hamish Magoffin.

Sleep took a big hit when baby Arthur was born in March 2021, but the Thailand-based family soon settled into a routine.

However, within a few months, Pranaya began to struggle. Breastfeeding was a challenge, and the new mother felt that she was unable to give the baby as much milk as she needed.

Her milk ducts were constantly blocked and life became an endless cycle of nursing and pumping to ensure enough milk.

“He latched onto it and started putting pressure on himself to try and get as much breast milk as possible,” Hamish said.

After a few weeks, the couple decided to switch to formula, believing it would reduce anxiety levels and improve Pranaya’s sleep. But it didn’t work.

“It was just terrible. Her sleep just fell apart,” Hamish said, explaining that instead of resting, his wife of four years developed insomnia.

Once an active mother, the 37-year-old struggled to get out of bed and regularly battled dark thoughts that eventually took over.

On September 1, less than six months after giving birth and a month after she was diagnosed with postpartum depression, Pranaya took her own life – and that of her son Arthur.

Pranaya was known to have a good relationship with children, with friends’ children calling her a “very nice aunt”.

Having children of her own was not a priority for Pranaya, but after she and Magoffin decided to start a family, she was looking forward to becoming a mother.

Getting pregnant was not easy, but the good news of pregnancy came in the summer of 2020 and her son Arthur was born in Bangkok the following year.

In the early weeks, Pranaya was a happy mother, according to her older sister, Pongnadda ‘Pong’ Oulapathorn.

She didn’t seem to be suffering from the “baby blues,” mood swings caused by the sudden hormonal changes that many new mothers experience in the first few weeks after giving birth.

The new family settled into a routine with ease, even as the world around them began to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When he wanted to pursue something, he went for it, did everything on his own and always achieved results,” Pong said.

He soon realized that no matter how hard he tried, things did not go as planned and this became a great source of anxiety.

“Raising a child for the first time, everything could not be controlled… breast milk, the child itself. The tension was building day by day without him realizing it, Pong said.

Pranaiya Was A Happy Mom

“The baby was a month old and [Pranaya] lived in an apartment without a garden, and the outdoor activities she enjoyed were limited,” Pong said.

This led to Pranaya developing tinnitus and insomnia, for which doctors prescribed steroids and sleeping pills respectively to treat each condition.

A few months after Arthur’s birth, although experts said he was doing well, Pranaya’s husband says he was also overly concerned about his son’s development.

She was afraid she “wasn’t a good mother,” her sister Pong said, and kept repeating the same things over and over again, pointing out what she thought was a problem.

And according to Hamish, she agreed to meet a family friend who had suffered and recovered from postpartum depression.

Pranaya started talking about wanting to disappear, wanting to go back to the way she was before Arthur was born, saying she didn’t want Arthur around anymore.

“That’s what he said,” Hamish said. He began to worry about the safety of his wife and children.

She was asked to take the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), a standard questionnaire used by doctors to assess symptoms of depression.

“We said, ‘Do you want to hear what we have to say?’ and he said, “No, just take the test. Whatever you say will just be subjective and I can’t really comment on that, Hamish said.

Using the EPDS, Pranaya was diagnosed with high anxiety and mild depression, so the doctor prescribed anti-depressants.

Instead, Pranaya’s depression worsened and there were days when she could not get out of bed.

Pranaya’s relatives were often unable to get out of bed and took care of her, while her husband took care of baby Arthur.

In August, a new doctor determined that Pranaya’s health had deteriorated to the point that she needed specialist help and recommended treatment at a private mental health hospital in Bangkok.

– At first the symptoms were quite severe and the risk of suicide was high, the psychiatrist who treated him there, the third doctor he saw, told CNN.

The doctor, who did not want to be named due to hospital protocols and the sensitivity of the case, said they diagnosed Pranaya with post-partum depression.

He said her symptoms – including suicidal thoughts, sleep problems and a lack of energy or interest in activities – were consistent with symptoms of major depressive disorder.

To do this, they prescribed a high-dose antidepressant, along with art therapy and three sessions of transcranial magnetic stimulation, a non-invasive therapy that uses electrical impulses to stimulate parts of the brain known to be involved in depression.

The changes in the medication and the fact that it wasn’t working was another source of anxiety for Pranaya, Hamish said.

“The person you know starts to disappear and the conversations you have are just shocking,” Hamish said.

“She said she wanted to disappear, that she couldn’t do it anymore and that she couldn’t be a mother because she had these thoughts.”

In late August, Pong took Pranaya to Hua Hin, a beach town south of Bangkok, hoping a change of scenery would help.

“We took deep breaths, stretched, talked, threw a ball on the beach … she laughed, which surprised her.”

“It was a really happy day. The beach, taking Arthur, playing in the sand and spending some time in the pool doing things we were really looking forward to,” Hamish recalled.

Although the return to Bangkok caused some anxiety, Hamish said his wife’s good spirits overall seemed to hold.

The couple hosted a dinner to celebrate their 10th anniversary and Hamish said he was looking forward to the evening ahead.

After a harrowing experience with postpartum depression, Hamish set out to raise awareness and work for programs that provide better education, care and research into the condition.

“PPD is as common in Thailand as in other countries, and is most often mild to moderate, but many patients go undiagnosed and untreated due to lack of awareness and stigma,” they said.

Hamish set up a foundation in his wife and son’s name, which was launched earlier this year.

To mark the occasion and raise money and awareness, he embarked on a 1,369km run, walk and cycle across the UK.

It took him 17 days and he collected over $63,000 in donations, mainly from Thailand and the UK.

“After we lost them, all I could do was walk. Just one foot in front of the other. I didn’t even want to run or do anything, just a slow walk,” she said.
