Little League President Stephen Keener said Thursday during a round-table discussion moderated by Republican Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that he put together the outlines after consulting with medical professionals and receiving guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization.

Keener emphasized that the decision is ultimately up to each family, “We think it’s as safe as it can be if you follow these guidelines…” He believes it’s important to show parents how to play.

Recommendations include eliminating all unnecessary contact and banning the postgame handshake line in favor of lining up on the respective baselines and handing caps to opponents.

The rules state that all players must wear a mask while in the dugout, and that coaches and volunteers must wear masks and protective medical gloves at all times. Players must be separated by six feet when in the dugout or in the stands, and sharing equipment is prohibited if possible. Umpires move from behind home plate to behind the pitcher’s mound, and game balls are changed every two innings.

Discounted sales are also prohibited. So are staples like sunflower seeds and ballpark spit. Recommendations include limiting the number of family members allowed in the facility to watch games.

The best practices were released a week after putting together a 67-page proposal outlining how Major League Baseball could bounce back this year. A breakdown of the costs associated with a Little League season, as well as the time commitment.

Don’t be thrown off by that title! I love Little League! Every one of my children and step kids have played baseball. That’s 7 out of 7 kids; We are definitely a baseball family. So this is not a post to talk about signing your child(ren) up for baseball. Instead, I wrote it to be a useful resource for you to review before making a decision. A Little League season ends up being little more than a registration fee and a few games.

**Note: I am preparing this post for anyone considering tee ball, this is for players ages 4-7. However, most of this information applies to all age groups in Little League, and I’ve added helpful comments when it applies to those considering signing up older kids for Little League. League.

As with any sport, there are many hidden costs to having a Little League baseball player. While it’s not astronomical, it’s always good to know what you’re getting into before you commit.

Please note: I’ve quoted estimated costs here, to give you an idea of how much it will cost when all is said and done. These quoted prices do not get you top-of-the-line equipment; Those are typical prices for young tee ballers ages 4-7.

As mentioned above, different registration fees cover different parts of the uniform, but you have to fill in the gaps yourself. Jerseys and hats are usually covered, but you’ll need to purchase the following items separately. (Note: The league or coach will determine the pants, belt and socks colors, so you will have to wait until you have direction on that)

Once the teams are organized, the team mother may contact you, asking for player contributions to cover the following costs:

Some team moms save a little money every time they shop. Most team moms add up the cost of all these items and ask for a one-time fee. Regardless of how they do it, each player’s share typically runs anywhere from $20-$40 per player for the season, depending on how big the coach’s gifts and parties are.

At least once during the season (and usually twice, depending on how many games vs. how many players are on the team), your player is responsible for providing a team snack at the end of the game . Most tee ball teams have 12 or 13 kids, and a typical snack consists of a drink (Gatorade, Capri Sun, etc.) and some small snacks (granola bars, fruit, crackers, etc.). There’s always someone on the team who gets mad and puts your snack to shame. But keep your head up. Nothing wrong with a granola bar, some goldfish and a capri sun. If you go cheap, you can get away with spending about $15 for the whole team. If you buy full-size Gatorades, fresh fruit, and a whole meal, you’ll obviously spend more than $15.

Registration Checklist For Local Leagues

Here is a short and condensed list of costs with an approximate dollar amount for a new tee baller (it will be cheap).

Practice scheduling is generally up to individual coaches, although the league determines which fields individual teams have access to (if practices are held on actual Little League fields).

There is usually a mix of practices, with some held at Little League fields on a day and time designated by the league, while other practices are held at a local park chosen by the coaches.

For tee ball, 2 practices per week is the norm, and once the games start, many coaches drop it down to one practice per week.

For tee ballers, I have never seen practices that last more than an hour at a time. That’s a long time to focus at that age. As they approach age 6 or 7, practices are usually just an hour, sometimes an hour and a half.

As they get older, the practices get longer and take up to 3 hours per day. No, that’s not a typo. You read that right. 3 hours. Most coaches are 2 or 2 1/2 though.

The leagues we play in usually have each team play every Saturday of the season with one or two byes (the bye is the day they normally play, but they have a day off).

Each team has weekday games (usually starting at 5:30 p.m.). Tee ball has the fewest games on a weekday, but they usually have several games per season.

Game On? Little League Offers ‘best Practices’ For Returning

Our experience is that as kids get older, the amount of daily games in addition to their Saturday games sometimes increases to 2-3 weekday games.

I have heard of other leagues opting for a double header where all games are on Saturdays with no weekday games, but each team plays 2 games each Saturday. So it just depends.

We are fortunate to be part of leagues that do not schedule matches on Sundays, but that is not always the case. As stated on their website, Little League rules “do not prohibit or promote games or practices on any particular day of the week.” If there is a certain day of the week that does not work for you due to religion or other reasons, check with your local league before registering.

Game days can be long. Coaches want players to show up anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours to warm up (obviously 30 minutes is extreme for tee ballers and 3 hours for older kids, but … it happens).

Tee ball games usually last from an hour to an hour and a half. There are no hard and fast rules from Little League, but each league has its own standard operating procedures. We usually see 3 full innings, with players from each team batting in each inning.

Now that you have an idea of what to expect, you have a decision to make! Check out your local Little League page and gather the information you need to make the right decision for your family.
