Few things can ruin a day like finding out your car battery is dead. But the day is not yet a lost case. Access to jumper cables and another moving vehicle is all you need to get back on the road. And if no other starter motor is available, you can also use a portable jump starter. All you have to do is follow these simple steps.
It’s a good idea to keep jump ropes in your vehicle and a first aid kit, flashlight, extra jacket, and other items for emergencies. It’s better to have them and never need them than to need them and not have them.

Connect one of the positive (red) jumper cable terminals to the dead battery terminal (marked with a “+” – always covered with a red cap).
Back on the immobilized car, place the black clip on this end on a piece of unpainted metal under the hood at least a foot from the dead battery. (See Protect yourself below.)
Run it at 1,500 rpm for at least a few minutes. After a few minutes, the dead battery should have enough charge to start the car in neutral.

So you hit the fire, and instead of your car starting and aiming to get you to your next destination, it just makes a quick clicking sound, or maybe no sound at all. Looks like you have a dead battery.
With a set of jumper cables in your trunk and another (working) vehicle nearby, you can be back on the road in under 10 minutes – and less if you have one of these portable jump starters with you.

Once you locate your car or truck battery, identify the positive and negative terminals. They are metal posts that protrude from the plastic surface and have plus (+) or minus (-) signs next to them.
Some car manufacturers go a step further and label the battery terminals with red on the positive side and black on the negative side. Once you have identified the positive and negative terminals of your battery, do the same for the active vehicle you use to jump start your car. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to make connections.
