How Much Does Gracie Barra Cost
How Much Does Gracie Barra Cost - From Aikido and Karate to Muay Thai and Taekwondo, there are so many forms of martial arts that help our children learn to thrive. Little Elliot recently tried Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids, and his mom shared how the trial class went.
I always planned for Elliot to learn some form of martial art when he was ready. By practicing fencing, I see the benefits of martial arts. It helps to build self-confidence, teaches self-discipline and at the same time instills a sense of respect, sharpens the mind and increases concentration. At the same time, it supports physical activity, teaches endurance, promotes conflict resolution and strengthens social skills.

Elliott is only four years old. He recently learned martial arts exercises at the school and he loves it. All day long at home he was doing air strikes! He was also getting better at following directions so I decided he was ready. There are so many different types of martial arts; I tried to choose one that would suit him. He likes to spar, so after doing some research I felt I should try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

I happened to hear that Evolve MMA was offering free trials, so we signed up. They have four stores - for our first try we went to the one at KINEX (formally OneKM Shopping Mall).
As the name suggests, Evolve MMA offers mixed martial arts. They offer BJJ and Muay Thai classes for children between the ages of 4 and 13. According to their website, the Little Samurai program takes a holistic approach to your childs overall well-being. Marketed as Singapores only childrens program developed by a Harvard graduate, it focuses on imparting life skills while bullying your child.
At first Elliott refused to come in and cried. The staff was so patient and knew how to handle him. It turned out that he just wanted to be dressed like other children. They lent him a set of gi (traditional uniform) and he immediately perked up. The coaching style was super optimistic. It was a large class of about 15 kids, but there were also two other assistant coaches helping out. He liked the class so much that he took a Muay Thai trial class. However, he wasnt as interested in it as BJJ.
Evolve MMA works like a gym membership. For around $350+ a month, you get an excess for all the childrens classes - there are eight classes a week. Its really worth it if you can attend that many classes. However, since were only willing to do it once a week right now, its not for us.

After googling I came across Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at 326C King Georges Avenue. Only a three minute walk from Lavender tube station means its the most convenient location for us.
I was very excited to see that they offer Kids Jiu-Jitsu for children ages three to five. The program is designed to introduce children to the principles and techniques of jiu-jitsu through fun and interactive games. It will also prepare them for the Junior Bully/Street Safe Program for older children aged 6-11 where they will hone their physical skills and safety strategies on the street and in the playground. The goal is to help children find their voice and equip them with the skills to deal with various forms of bullying and challenges in life through Gracie Jiu-Jitsus anti-bullying methodology.
I was sold. We signed up for the exam. There were eight children in the class with one teacher and two assistants. The kids just liked the pace. I really like Coach Cams teaching style. He was gentle but firm with the children and Elliott really enjoyed the lesson. I am already very interested in this school. But since Elliott can be quite fickle, I asked for a second test just to make sure.
It was clear that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was the perfect choice for us in terms of program, pace, location and cost. The fee is $180 per month for the weekly Tots Jiu-Jitsu program. Held every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The school sells a new GI set for $120.

Elliott has been in this program for almost a month now and he loves it. He is so looking forward to Saturday morning and practicing his moves on me all the time!
I also selected Gracie Barr at 42B Hong Kong Street for trial at the same time. The location near Clarke Quay MRT station is not ideal for us but we still signed up to try out their kids class.
We went on Wednesday evening. This session was the most positive and energetic of the three. I thought it was probably too energetic for three and four year olds. I felt exhausted just watching them! But I was really impressed with how Elliot handled it. In an hour, he successfully learned to disassemble one leg. It was also clear that Elliott burned the most energy in this class. In fact, he then asked for a long list of food for dinner and completely removed the food, which never happens!
Childrens classes at Gracie Barra are held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. I thought it would be nice to have a choice. It includes children from four to 12 years old with a small number of students in the class. We visited the court on Wednesday night and there were less than 10 kids, one head coach (Coach Braga) and two assistant coaches. Most of the kids were much older than Elliot, but he really bonded with two of the kids. This made this class his favorite of the three classes.

Gracie Barra was also the most affordable of the three, as you can purchase packages of 10 or 20 entries in addition to membership-style payments. It only works out to $30 per class. The main deterrent for me was the distance. I also preferred that Elliot be in a class dedicated to children in his age group.
Simply put, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that does not involve striking or kicking. Instead, he uses techniques that put opponents in positions that are too difficult to escape from and force them to surrender. If its something useful for your child, why not register them?
As I found out, all martial arts academies have their pros and cons. Its a good idea to do a few trials to find what works best for you and your baby. Best wishes!
