How Many Years Ago Was 1955

How Many Years Ago Was 1955 – On August 28, 1955, Emmett Thiel, a 14-year-old African-American from Chicago, was brutally murdered while visiting family in Mooney, Mississippi, accused of flirting with a white woman four days earlier.

His assailants—the white woman’s husband and her brother—ordered Emmett to strip the 75-pound gin fan to the banks of the Tallahassee River. The couple then nearly beat her to death, gouged out her eyes and shot her in the head before tying her body with barbed wire and dumping it in a river.

On August 24, Emmett bragged that his homecoming girlfriend was blonde as he stood with his uncle and some friends outside Money’s Country Store. Emmett’s African-American friends did not believe him, and dared him to date the white women sitting behind the store counter.

He went inside to buy some candy, and when he went out, he heard the woman say, “Bye, baby.” There were no witnesses at the store, but the woman behind the counter, Carolyn Bryant, later claimed he groped her, made lewd gestures and whistled while she hung out.

A few days later, Roy Bryant, the store’s owner and the woman’s husband, returned from a business trip to overhear Emmett allegedly talking to his wife. Enraged, he and half-brother JW Milam in the early hours of August 28.

Both demanded to see the boy. Despite Wright’s pleas, they force Emmett into the car. Driving at night, perhaps beating Thiel in a tool room behind Milam’s house, they took him to the Tallahassee River.

Three days later, her body was recovered but mutilated and Moss Wright could only identify it by a ring with an initial. Officials wanted to bury the body as soon as possible, but Thiel’s mother, Mamie Bradley, demanded it be returned to Chicago.

After seeing the mutilated remains, he decides to have an open coffin funeral so the world can see what the racist killer did to his only son.

An African-American weekly published a photo of Emmett’s body, and the mainstream media quickly picked up the story.

Less than two weeks after Emmett’s body was buried, Milam and Bryant were tried in a separate courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi. There were few witnesses other than Moss Wright, who positively identified the accused as Emmett’s killer.

On September 23, an all-white jury deliberated for less than an hour before returning a “not guilty” verdict, saying they believed the state had failed to identify the body. Many across the country were outraged by the state’s decision not to try Milam and Bryant separately for the kidnappings.

The Emmett Till assassination exposed the brutality of Jim Crow segregation in the South and was an early driver of the civil rights movement.

, revealing that Carolyn Bryant recanted her testimony, admitting that Thiel never touched, threatened or harassed her. “There’s nothing the boy has done to justify what happened to him,” she said. In 2022, a grand jury in Mississippi declined to indict Bryant for his role in the crime nearly 70 years ago.

In March 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Emmett Thiel Anti-Lynching Act, which made lynching a federal hate crime.

FBI records show that Carolyn Bryant Donham was named in a warrant accused of kidnapping Thiel nearly 67 years ago, even before his mutilated body was found in the river — but she was never arrested or tried in the case. Its brutality has shocked the world.

Authorities said at the time that the woman had two young children and did not want to disturb her. Donham’s then-husband and another man were acquitted.

Thiel’s relatives still prefer a manslaughter charge. But there is no evidence that the kidnapping warrant was ever revoked so it could be used to arrest Donham and eventually bring him to criminal court, said Jerry Bushill, an attorney working with the Thiel family.

“This search warrant is a stepping stone toward that goal,” she said. “Since the search warrant is expired, we would like to show him the search warrant.”

There are many obstacles. Witnesses have died in the decades since Thiel’s murder, and it’s unclear what happened to the evidence investigators gathered. The location of the original warrant is also a mystery. It may be in the record box of the old courthouse in Lee Flore County, Mississippi, where the kidnapping took place.

One of Thiel’s relatives said Donham would have been arrested for Thiel’s kidnapping if not for the murder.
