There’s a lot of hype around intermittent fasting, a term that can encompass everything from skipping a meal every day to fasting a few days a week.

Or, how about this approach: just limit your daily feeding window to 10 hours. This means that if you eat your first bite at 8:00, you will need to consume your last calorie of the day at 6:00.
The researchers followed a group of overweight participants who followed the approach for about three months. “Typically, people would opt for an 8:00 to 6:00 eating window,” explains Dr. Pam Taub, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and an author of the study.
During the fasting period, participants are encouraged to stay hydrated with water. Each day, they recorded their meal times and sleep on an app.
“We saw a 3% reduction in their weight and a 4% reduction in abdominal visceral fat,” says Taub.

“We didn’t ask them to change what they ate,” she explained, although the participants ate about 8.6% fewer calories, likely as a result of the limited eating window.
In addition to weight loss, “we saw that cholesterol levels improved and blood pressure [levels] also improved,” Taub explained. There were also some reported improvements in sleep quality, with many of the participants reporting more energy.
“We were surprised that this small change in feeding time gave them such a big benefit,” says Satchidananda Panda, a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and co-author of the study. Panda and Taub have several theories that may help explain the reduction in abdominal fat and weight loss.
“When you go into a fasted state, you start to deplete your body’s glucose stores and start using fat for energy,” explains Taub. “You can get into a state of low-grade ketosis.”

And once stored fat is fueling your body, “which can lead to a fair amount of weight loss,” says Panda.
There are still many unanswered questions when it comes to fasting, such as: Are shorter periods of fasting effective? “There is recent data showing that restricting the time [eating to] even 12 hours has beneficial effects,” says Dr. Phyllis Zee, director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. she wasn’t involved in the new study, but we asked her to take a look.”What’s interesting is the weight loss result over 12 weeks,” she says.
The study was small, only 19 people. All the participants were overweight and had a cluster of risk factors — high blood sugar, high cholesterol and high blood pressure — that put them at higher risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A larger study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is underway to examine daily fasting in people with metabolic syndrome.
For now, the new findings offer preliminary evidence of the benefits of daily fasting. Taub says she can think of a few extra hours of daily fasting as a way to give her metabolic organs a break.

“When you’re constantly giving your body calories, you’re constantly making your cells work,” she says. Just as your body and brain feel refreshed after a good night’s sleep, researchers say fasting can help restore and rejuvenate your organs.
This isn’t the first research to show that meal timing can make a difference to our waistlines. As we reported, a study from a few years ago found that dieters who ate their main meal of the day before 3:00. He lost about 5 pounds more than people who ate late at night.
And as scientists learn more, it’s becoming clear that our bodies are timing machines. Not only do we have a master clock in our brain, but there are also clocks in every organ in our body, from the pancreas to the stomach to the liver.
Daylight is an important signal to reset our master clock every day, but it is the first bite of food we take in the morning that can be an important signal to reset other clocks in our organs.

“When the timing of meals doesn’t match the sleep-wake cycle, there’s a disconnect between the different clocks that we have in basically every cell in our body,” said Frank Scheer, director of the Medical Chronobiology Program at Brigham and Women’s . Hospital, he told us several years ago.
“When our body clocks are out of sync,” our bodies don’t work as efficiently, and this can lead us to store more fat, explains Panda. “And over a long period of time, this can lead to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and increased risk of heart disease,” says Panda.
