This in-depth article also provides a comprehensive analysis of the key trends of the past decade.
As there is much more data available today than there is for generating many preliminary reports, some of the numbers we will discuss below may not match the data published in previous reports.
According to a Kepios analysis, the number of Internet users has more than doubled in the last decade, from 2.18 billion in early 2012 to 4.95 billion in early 2022.
The result was a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.6% over the past decade - as shown in the chart below - but the annual growth rate has fluctuated significantly from year to year.

According to the latest data, the number of internet users has increased by 192 million in the last 12 months, with an annual growth rate of just 4.0% in 2021.
However, this low growth is more likely a result of data collection and reporting issues during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and we suspect this figure does not reflect the actual growth of internet users over the past year.
As a result, it is very likely that we will report higher growth rates between 2021 and 2022 as new data becomes available.
Thats more than the 1.48 billion we saw in 2012, meaning social media users have achieved a CAGR increase of 12% over the past decade.
Higher Education Benchmarking 2020
Growth in social media users has also maintained a double-digit growth rate of 10.1% over the past 12 months, but it is surprising that growth between 2021 and 2022 is above pre-pandemic levels.
Contextually up-to-date figures show that 424 million users started their social media journey last year, corresponding to an average of over one million new users per day or approximately 13.5 million new users per day.
However, anyone who hesitated to join social media before the pandemic hit would most likely have signed up at the start of the blockade in 2020, so hesitates to make a significant contribution to growth over the past 12 months. A kind of COVID effect.
Moreover, with social media users now accounting for 58.4% of the worlds population, we should expect growth to slow down in the next few years. social media users.

The good news is that by 2022, social media users will reach 60% of the worlds population. So, even as growth slows down, the overall potential of social media reach is still exciting.
The data shows that the number of people who remain disconnected from the internet has dropped below 3 billion for the first time.
This is an important milestone on the global digital equal access path and is especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic as the role of connected devices changes from a luxury to a lifebuoy.
In South Asia, over a billion people are offline, and across Africa, nearly 840 million people are not yet online.

In terms of the median age of the population, it plays an important role in shaping the level of adoption in many parts of Africa, with more than half of the population of many countries in the region still under the age of 20.
For example, in the Central African Republic, where internet access is still low, only 1 in 7 people currently have access to electricity, and most still do not have access to basic sanitation.
Also, according to the GSMA Intelligence report, State of the Best Mobile Internet Connections 2021, 1 in 4 people in low- and middle-income countries still do not know about the existence of mobile Internet.
In other words, hundreds of millions of people around the world may not even know the Internet exists.

So, while the United Nations may have made internet access a basic human right, we have a long way to go to ensure that everyone has equal access to arguably the most important innovations of our time.
When it comes to the worlds popular social media platform, the latest GWI figures show that Instagram is now ahead of Facebook.
But its still close. 14.8% of internet users around the world indicated Instagram as their favorite platform, while Facebook chose 14.5%.
Another meta-platform, WhatsApp, topped the world rankings, choosing instant messaging as the favorite social networking platform for 15.7% of working-age internet users.

Interestingly, WeChat garnered enough votes to take fourth place globally, despite a whopping 99% of votes for the platform from mainland Chinese users.
China is home to around 20% of all internet users in the world, so its no surprise that Chinese social media users have a significant influence on these global rankings.
This isnt entirely in line with the excitement TikTok is generating in the media, but its worth noting that the number of people choosing TikTok as their favorite social networking platform has increased by 71% in the past 90 days, and TikToks overall voting share has increased. In just three months, it grew by 180 basis points.
The Annie app also reports that TikTok was the most downloaded mobile app in 2021, and the platform continues to enjoy strong growth in ad reach (see below for more details).

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, one of the main news was that the world had become more dependent on the Internet, especially as countries were blocked.
However, despite changes in mobility restrictions over the past two years, the latest data shows that people actually spend more time using connected technologies than ever before.

According to a study by GWI, an ordinary global internet user now spends almost seven hours a day accessing the internet from any device.
For example, assuming the average person sleeps about 7-8 hours a day, the average Internet user spends more than 40% of their waking hours on the Internet.
The amount of time we spend online is steadily increasing, and the average day has increased by 4 minutes a day (+ 1.0%) over the past year.
It may not sound like a huge increase, but if we add all the internet users around the world, by 2022 there will be over 5 billion hours a day using the internet for an additional 4 minutes a day.
I Don’t Have To Worry About Money Anymore. So Now What?
Recent figures suggest that the world will spend more than 12.5 trillion hours online by 2022 alone.
However, as with most data points in the global digital report, there are significant variations in the time taken by regions.
South Africa currently spends the most time online every day, and working-age internet users use online technology an average of 10 hours and 46 minutes each day.
Filipinos, Brazilians and Colombians are not far behind. The average internet user in these countries is
